Jorge Luis Borges – Y Uno Aprende

December 29, 2009 Leave a comment

Después de un tiempo,
uno aprende la sutil diferencia
entre sostener una mano
y encadenar un alma,
y uno aprende que el amor
no significa acostarse

After a while, you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul
You learn that love doesn’t mean leaning, and that company doesn’t mean security
And you begin to learn that kisses are not contracts and gifts are not promises
And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open
With a grace of a woman, not the grief of a child
And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight
After a while you learn that even too much sunshine can burn you
You plant your own garden and decorate your own soul
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers
And you learn that you can really endure
That you are really strong and that you really have worth
And you learn and learn

Bed! Love Bed!

December 22, 2009 Leave a comment

I finally bought a new bed!  I received my settlement from the car accident last week, and I spent the money on purchasing a mattress, bedframe, and nightstand.  My favorite furniture slanger (“slanger” is her word, not mine) delivered it this past weekend.

After 17 years of using the same mattress, it was time for an upgrade.  But maybe I overdid it… just a bit.  The behemoth that is a Cal-King is sitting in my room.  Compared to my old full-size, it’s HUGE.  In the morning, I have to roll over 3x to get to my alarm clock on the other side of the bed.  Margie told me it could fit 4 people comfortably.  I joked that I could use it as my next pick up line:

“Heeeeeeeey, guuuuuhnnnn.  Heeeeeeeeeey.  Wanna come over?  I have a Cal-King!  You can bring a friend!”

But I have to admit, I was a little sad to see my old mattress go.  I’ve been sleeping on it since I was 10 years old.  I have a tendency to grow very attached to things that have been with me for more than a decade.  I still wear the red and white sleep shorts that I bought back in 1992, which btw, I will NEVER get rid of.  It’s like my baby adult blanket.

It’s good to start over with a new bed.  I had a dream the other night that I was relaxing in a 1920s style bathtub.  The tiles in the bathroom were this really soothing sky blue, and the sunlight was streaming in the half-sized window behind the sink.  The water felt like the perfect temperature.  Then, I woke up and realized that I was still perfectly warm and content under the covers in my new bed.  Heaven!

Christmas Party

December 20, 2009 Leave a comment

Yay!  I won the Gingerbread Man Decorating Contest this year!

Their Christmas parties are always so much fun.  Everyone ended up staying for 8 hours playing games and hanging out.

I think I had a little too much chocolate and caffeine… I feel extremely hyper.  Damn ittttttttt….. I have to go to sleep soon so I can wake up early tomorrow and finish my year-end presentation for work.  Oh well.

LA Auto Show

December 13, 2009 Leave a comment

Felicia and Katie invited me to see the LA Auto Show with them today.  I’ve never really been very interested in cars, but I ended up having a really good time at the show.  There were some pretty creative displays, and wow, the concept cars…. really awesome.  We were there for about 4-5 hours.

I think this was the GMC Concept Car?  Extra-slow shutter speed produces some pretty weird results.

The interior of this car is crazy!  It reminds me of the spaceship cockpit in the Planet of the Apes movie.  I love it!

Felicia brought up a really good point with the name of this hybrid car.  I do agree with her that if you’re going to name a car Volt, it should be a vehicle powered by electricity only.  But when does Chevy ever get it right, anyway?

I really liked this display.

Dodge Viper.  Well, hello there.

Honda P-Nut.  Seats 3; 1 in the front, 2 in the back.

P-Nut, the view of the butt.

Whoever designed the Scion display this year should get a fat raise.

Seriously, a big fat raise. The display was awesome.

Back view of a golf cart on steroids.

Rolls Royce.

After we were done, we hopped on the train and headed to Koreatown for dinner.  Then, we headed back to Long Beach.  What a great day!

Lover, You Should’ve Come Over

December 13, 2009 Leave a comment

How can I not believe in a higher power?  Not that Jeff Buckley is God or an Angel, but wow, did he have a beautiful soul.  His music makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time.  I think his life is a testimony that there’s something much greater out there that can only be experienced and never imagined.

Jeff Buckley – Lover, You Should’ve Come Over

Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
And maybe I’m too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight, you’re on my mind so you never know

Broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it
Where are you tonight, child you know how much I need it
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage he’s done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no one

So I’ll wait for you and I’ll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return
Oh will I ever learn

Oh lover, you should’ve come over
‘Cause it’s not too late

Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that won’t ever come

It’s never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon your shoulder
It’s never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her
It’s never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It’s never over, she’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

Well maybe I’m just too young
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh lover, you should’ve come over
‘Cause it’s not too late

Well I feel too young to hold on
And I’m much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage I’ve done

Sweet lover, you should’ve come over
Oh, love well I’m waiting for you

Lover, you should’ve come over
‘Cause it’s not too late

Kindle…. My Lover, My Friend

December 12, 2009 Leave a comment

I purchased the 2nd generation Kindle as soon as it was released earlier this year, and since, I haven’t put the damn thing down.  I can’t go to bed without reading for at least 2 hours every night.  I love it because I don’t have to constantly adjust my reading position.  The only thing I have to worry about is not falling asleep while it’s propped up on my chest.  I’ve had it hit my face a couple of times and that was not very fun.

I just wish that Kindle had a wider selection of novels, especially translated novels.  Most of my favorite magical realism novelists write in Spanish.  I did a search for “Gabriel Garcia Marquez” on the Kindle site, and I was very disappointed that the only book available for the unit is his biography written by Gerald Martin.  Come on, Amazon!  Get those rights for the translated novels so I can download them on my sexy Kindle!  Lets show some customer service!  Lets show some hustle!

I <3 Rain

December 11, 2009 Leave a comment

I love rain.  Perfect way to enjoy rainy days;

1.  Warm comforters
2.  Hot tea
3.  Calvin and Hobbes comic books

I plan on spending the majority of this weekend at home.  And I’m not going to dress up from my PJs unless I have a damn good reason to.

High and Dry

December 11, 2009 Leave a comment

Radiohead – High and Dry

Two jumps in a week
I bet you think that’s pretty clever, don’t you boy?
Flying on your motorcycle
Watching all the ground beneath you drop
You’d kill yourself for recognition
Kill yourself to never ever stop
You broke another mirror
You’re turning into something you are not

Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry

Drying up in conversation
You will be the one who cannot talk
All your insides fall to pieces
You just sit there wishing you could still make love
They’re the ones who’ll hate you
When you think you’ve got the world all sussed out
They’re the ones who’ll spit at you
You will be the one screaming out

Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry

Oh it’s the best thing that you ever had
Best thing that you ever ever had
It’s the best thing that you ever had
Best thing you ever had has gone away

Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry
Don’t leave me high

Don’t leave me high
Don’t leave me dry

Bad!

December 10, 2009 Leave a comment

I am a bad blog writer!  Baaaaad!  I haven’t updated in forever!  I’ve been working on a few things, but seriously, this holiday season has been madness for me.  Madness!

Hopefully, I’ll have a chance to post something new this weekend.
